What this tool does
Explain This Code is a free AI code explainer from Contral. Paste up to 6,000 characters of code in any common language and it returns a plain-English summary, a line-by-line walkthrough, the key programming concepts used, potential bugs and risks, and a three-question "Defend your code" quiz that checks you actually understood it.
How to use Explain This Code
- 1
Paste your code
Paste a function, class or file of up to 6,000 characters into the editor, or click "Try an example".
- 2
Pick a language and level
Leave the language on auto-detect or pick it yourself, then choose Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced.
- 3
Read the explanation
Start with the plain-English summary, then follow the line-by-line walkthrough, the key concepts and the potential bugs.
- 4
Defend your code
Answer the three multiple-choice questions about the code. Each answer reveals whether you were right and why.
What you get for every snippet
Plain-English summary
Two or three sentences on what the code does and why someone would write it.
Line-by-line walkthrough
Each block of lines explained in order, with the matching code shown next to it.
Key concepts
The programming ideas the code relies on, such as recursion, closures or hash maps, each in one sentence.
Potential bugs & risks
Edge cases, security issues and performance traps specific to this code.
Defend your code quiz
Three multiple-choice questions about this exact code, with the answer and reasoning revealed after you pick.
Three explanation levels
Beginner avoids jargon, Intermediate assumes the basics, Advanced focuses on design and edge cases.
Why understanding AI-generated code matters
AI coding agents can write a working feature in seconds. The catch is that working code you don't understand is code you can't debug, extend or defend in a code review or a job interview. Shipping code you never read is what people call vibecoding: fast at first, painful the first time something breaks.
Reading an explanation helps, but it can create an illusion of understanding: everything makes sense while you read it, and then you can't reproduce it on your own. That is why this tool ends with a quiz. If you can answer questions about what the code returns, why a line is there and what would break if it changed, you understand it. If you can't, you know exactly which part to go back to.
For a whole project rather than a snippet, follow our guide to understanding an AI-generated codebase, and look up unfamiliar terms like teaching layer or Defense mode in the Contral glossary.
Explanations without leaving your editor
Contral is an AI coding assistant that teaches while you build. In the Contral extension and Contral IDE, right-click any code and choose Contral: Explain selection, and when Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Codex CLI or another agent edits a file, Contral shows a teaching card explaining what changed and why.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Explain This Code free?
Yes. Explain This Code is free and needs no account or sign-up. To keep it free for everyone, each visitor can explain a limited number of snippets per day.
Which programming languages does it support?
It auto-detects the language by default and works with Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java, C, C++, C#, Go, Rust, Ruby, PHP, Swift, Kotlin, SQL, HTML, CSS and Shell / Bash. You can also pick the language yourself if auto-detect guesses wrong.
Is my code stored?
No. This tool doesn't save the code you paste. The code is sent to an AI model provider (NVIDIA NIM) only to generate the explanation, and the result is shown in your browser. Don't paste passwords, API keys or other secrets.
How accurate are the explanations?
The explanations are generated by an AI model, so they are usually right but can be wrong, especially about subtle edge cases. Treat the walkthrough and the bug list as a starting point: run the code, test the edge cases, and use the quiz to check your own understanding.
What is the "Defend your code" quiz?
After the explanation you get three multiple-choice questions about your specific code, such as what it returns for an input or what breaks if a line changes. Answering reveals the correct option and a one-line reason. It is a small version of Contral's Defense mode, which asks you to prove you understand code instead of just accepting it.
Can it explain code written by ChatGPT, Copilot, Cursor or Claude?
Yes. Paste any AI-generated snippet to see what it does, which concepts it relies on and where it might break. If you use AI agents every day, the Contral extension does this inside your editor: it shows a teaching card explaining each change an AI agent makes.
How much code can I paste?
Up to 6,000 characters per explanation, which is roughly 150 to 200 lines. For bigger files, explain one function or class at a time: smaller pieces get more detailed walkthroughs.
Can I get explanations inside my editor?
Yes. With the Contral extension for VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf and other VS Code-based editors, right-click any code and choose Contral: Explain selection for a line-by-line explanation. The Free plan includes 5 code explanations per day, and paid plans include unlimited explanations.
